Heart Practise

“The basic teaching of Yoga and all religions is give, give, give.
Let every minute of your life be useful to humanity.
Bring peace and joy to everybody and no harm to anybody.
This is the only way to true happiness: there are no shortcuts.
Live in the heart and only visit the mind when you need to.”
Sri Swami Satchidananda

In our mind driven society quite the opposite is true: life has become so hectic and full of enduring what we don’t want or endlessly chasing something that we do want, that we live in our thoughts and often close the Heart completely. Our society rewards thought. Mental illness is on the rise especially in young women who struggle with what the world seems to dictate that they should be. Antidepressants and other antipsychotic medications are prescribed more often than ever before. Back pain from sitting and staring at computer screens is a national pandemic. What we feel inside is secondary. We have so many bills to pay that stopping is a luxury. But what if there were a way in which you can internally transform the way you feel?

The Spiritual Heart

My beloved teacher Rev Padma Devi Sumananda says that there is a long way of studying the scriptures, doing all of the practises to calm the mind and eventually after a lifetime of dedication you will arrive at the essence of all. Call it the universe, God, god, source, you name it. And then she says there is the short path: direct experience. So what is this path she has discovered after dedicating her life to the teachings?

All we need to do is to connect to that which connects us all: the spiritual Heart. When we connect with it we immediately feel unconditional love, peace and steadiness. Do not confuse this with mind based emotion: I am referring to a constant unwavering experience. By connecting to the spiritual Heart we are shifting identification from the mind (who we “think” we are) to pure consciousness. Our awareness changes as we experience there is something other than what we think we are. The minute this happens your life will never be the same (in a good way). Suddenly we experience, we know that there is something more to us than the mind or the body.

We transcend our limited thoughts and enter the infinite space of the Heart. Here we are at home. We are at one with everything and everyone. We have found peace.

Heart meditation is as simple as 1,2,3:

  1. Breathe
  2. Hand on spiritual Heart
  3. Smile
